A Brand New Day, A Brand New Set Of Liver Updates…Now With Even More Derek!

Well, lookie here. Someone is looking a little lighter in the liver.

Well, lookie here. Someone is looking a little lighter in the liver.

It’s Tuesday, which means Derek still has a new liver, and it’s time for a whole new set of updates from trusty hospital sources.

I’m not sure how much I’ll hear today, but I’ll post whatever I do hear, and may add some cute GIFs of baby animals along the way.

10:15 AM: Logan and Derek were both able to visit with their families this morning. Logan was sitting up in the chair next to her bed. “Incredible.” She’s sore, but in great spirits, especially after being wheeled to see Derek last night. Derek was also wide awake this morning, and said he feels tired from lack of sleep but only feels some mild soreness. According to sources, both look “fantastic.” No rooms yet, as they will be in PAC (post-operative unit) until later today.

Oh, and check out this dog petting this man.

You'd have no idea these guys are engineers, right?

12:30 PM: Just got this image from Derek’s dad. Apparently, Derek’s colleagues at BAE are paying their respects by taking on the celebration of Bow Tie Tuesday.

That’s Greg Hallerman on the right, Jim Steenson in the middle, and Bill Barry on the left. Pretty snazzy, no? And you’re welcome for providing their LinkedIn pages. There’s no bad time for networking, after all.

1:59 PM: Logan and Derek are enjoying some quiet recovery time. According to a trusty source who spoke with one of their nurses by phone, things are progressing nicely and a few tubes have been removed. Later this afternoon when they are once again receiving visitors, we’ll likely get another update.

Oh, and this is what I imagine “quiet recovery time” looks like:

Are Logan and Derek dogs? Nope. Are they even in the same room right now? Nope. Still, this is probably what they look like.

3:20 PM: A positive milestone for everyone! Logan and Derek have been assigned hospital rooms and will be transported to them shortly. Logan will be in 6 Central Room 11, and Derek will be in 6 Central, Room 21.

4:02: You totally want to see a photo of Derek, don’t you? Well, here you go. It pretty much speaks for itself.

Does this look like a man who's got a new liver? You be the judge.

Todd Bookman: “I wouldn’t be smiling if I had a catheter.”

6:16 PM: Derek and Logan have been safely transferred to Lahey 6th floor recovery. They both look and feel great!

More good news, they also have the technology to provide direct updates going forward. So, to all of you, to Stan, my trusty source in the fray, and to Derek and Logan, thanks for everything. It’s been my pleasure to be the substitute blogger, but I’m even happier that Livernalia has been such a success that my services are no longer needed. Phew.

Thank you, and goodnight. And most of all, love to the happy couple.

It’s Really Time To Read These Updates, Guys.

Check back throughout the day for updates on Derek and Logan. I will continue to receive texts from Liver Central and will post them below. If I get no news for long stretches, I may post something anyway, just so there’s something for you to see when you return.

Final Monday Update, 3:43 PM: Logan’s mom was able to visit Logan, and Derek’s parents were able to visit Derek. Both patients were responsive and looked great! The nurse said that they’d likely wheel Logan next to Derek for a “Hi – Hello” later tonight.

Thanks for reading today…I’ll create a new post for tomorrow if I get more updates.

1:31 PM: Derek has a new liver!!! According to his dad, the doctor says the technical pieces are complete. The next 24 hours are critical to monitor the connections and liver activity. In the words of my trusty source…WOW.

Derek has a new liver! For realz.

12:36 PM: While we’re waiting for news on Derek, check out this adorable, life-affirming baby hippo.

12:20 PM: Logan’s surgery is complete! The surgeon met with Logan’s mother and said all went very well. Derek’s surgery will continue for a couple more hours.

11:30 AM: Both Logan and Derek are still in the O.R. According to my trusty source at the hospital, this is “very much matching the expectations set by the surgeons.”

Did someone say juice boxes? Well okay, then.

10:16 AM: Text message confirms Logan and Derek are both still in the O.R. as expected.

8:58 AM: Derek entered the O.R. at 8:40. Word is, all is going according to plan.

7:38 AM: Logan and Derek checked in to the hospital at 6:00 AM. Logan has entered the O.R. at 7:30.

Just think of me as your “substitute blogger.” Just like your real blogger, only with more film strips shown.

This is what I imagine Livernalia would look like, except with more, you know, livers.

Hi. I’m Rebecca, and I’ve taken on the role of substitute blogger, posting updates around Derek and Logan’s Livernalia. That’s right, your substitute blogger has even re-branded this thing. I’m not sure I was supposed to do that, but I’m really embracing my sub role. Kind of like that 9th grade science sub who tried to tell you Creationism was an alternative scientific theory.

It’s great to meet you all on this virtual plane. It’s a big responsibility to post updates, and I promise to do it earnestly and without snark, despite what this introduction may imply about me.

As Logan mentioned, I’ll create a master post for Monday that I’ll simply update as I get news. You probably won’t get a notice that an update has been made as I’m not writing a new blog each time, so check back for the latest news.

Have a great weekend, and if you happen to see a Maypole in your travels, for goodness sake, grab a ribbon and dance around it.
