Although some scientific literature suggests that there is little to no correlation between consumption of alcohol and the progression of PSC, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol probably isn’t a good idea. The liver is a big filter after all – one of its primary jobs is filtering out toxins from the body.
The fact that I can’t drink, isn’t the same as being an alcoholic (see Tom Hanks as Uncle Ned in Family Ties). I still get to enjoy vanilla extract, root beer, alcohol that’s been cooked off, and other items containing small amounts of alcohol. It’s about making the liver’s job as easy as possible. I also stay away from NSAIDs, caffeine, and other drugs that have warnings about “liver disease”.
